Hello everyone and welcome to Jewelry Shoot – My name is Ash Moosa and I’m the photographer behind this site. Here is some background on myself and how I stumbled into this business.

I spent many years of my career in marketing & ecommerce. I’ve worked with major retailers like Gap, Staples, Bed Bath & Beyond and others over the years. In 2011, for a secondary income, I started a small business selling handmade/boutique jewelry online. The business did well on a small scale but I discontinued it because I was the middleman and my margins were too low. But by the time I stopped that business, I had invested a lot into photography equipment, taken courses and learned so much about jewelry photography that I started offering photography services – that’s how JewelryShoot began. I put up an ad on Craigslist with some samples of my work and got my first client.

Since then, I’ve shot thousands of pieces of jewelry and I’ve worked with about 75+ clients.  I’ve seen a lot of different styles of jewelry. I’ve shot jewelry made from beads, gemstones, resins, pearls, all metals gold/silver/rose gold, small diamonds, cubic zirconia, antiqued/blackened metals, vintage/recycled jewelry and almost everything else. Different types of jewelry requires different techniques and props and having shot so many different styles, I’ve learned how to work with everything from tiny studs to long necklaces.

To keep it simple, I only work with white or transparent backgrounds. A lot of times I get requests for a graduated black to white type background. While I don’t shoot with that type of a background, you could get it done in photoshop. At some point, I might post a tutorial on how to do that.
